Patch Tuesday Fallout Continues

August 18th, 2006 · No Comments

The patching issue is only going to get worse. The patching industry
will continue to stay ahead of the OS vendors for infrastructure. This
stuff is just too hard.

Patch Tuesday Fallout Continues
By Mary Jo Foley

Windows Client
The fallout from last week’s Patch Tuesday continues. It’s now come to
light that among the myriad patches Microsoft released last week were, unbeknownst to many, the first Windows Vista patches. Meanwhile, given Microsoft’s need to give priority to the MS06-040 patch (due to imminent hacks and attacks), Microsoft postponed distributing a number of its other “critical” patches,
a fact about which many small businesses and home users may still be
unaware. Finally, users running Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1
on Windows 2000 and XP systems may be encountering problems with
patches in MS06-042. Microsoft is planning to reissue the MS06-042 bulletin and patches on August 22.
