Few people understand what really happened with the advent of NetWare. Novell was the first company to figure out how to make money selling software infrastructure. Before Novell, soft infrastructure was included with some hardware, or sold with a service contract.
The dynamics this created that still exist and some of the lessons learned at in my next mini essay.
